Stieff Rose
Stieff Rose was patented in 1892, the same date
as the birth of the company. The company was originally known as The Baltimore
Silver Company. In 1904 the name was changed to The Stieff Company.
Stieff Rose was originally known just as Rose. Stieff was added to the
name when the company merged with Kirk to differentiate between this Rose &
a Rose already made by Kirk. Stieff Rose is
very similar to a pattern made by Kirk, known as Repousse.
Kirk Stieff Company, acquired by
Lenox in 1990, is the business descendant of two famous 19th century
companies, Samuel Kirk & Son and The Stieff Company. Samuel Kirk & Son,
founded in 1815, is Americas oldest silversmith. The Stieff Company,
founded in 1892, is known for its exacting reproductions of historical
patterns, many of which can be found in the Smithsonian, and its expertise
with the repouss method of working silver. Repouss means that the design
is pushed out of the silver rather than engraved into it.
